Comprehensive History

Smithville United Methodist Church located at 243 North Milton Street, Smithville was established in 1814. It was organized as a Methodist Episcopal congregation. Buildings were erected in 1916 and 1958. Prior to the construction of a building, members met in homes in Section 34 of Green Township and in a building at the junction of North Milton and North Summit Streets. Sources found for this church include; Church Histories of Wayne County Ohio, Wipert p. 94, History of Wayne County, Ohio, 1987, page 63 and Smithville United Methodist Church History (found in the United Methodist Churches of Wayne County, OH notebook located in the Genealogy Dept. at Wayne County Public Library).

From their website under 'About Us': Smithville United Methodist Church began on October 8, 1812, as the first religious gathering in Green Township, when sixteen people met in the cabin of Michael Thomas. A Reverend Gray, a circuit rider passing through the area saw the group and exclaimed, "I believe I have found my flock in the desert!" He shared a message and the group shared a dinner of venison and "johnnycakes." Two years later, this first religious group was organized as a congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Thomas Summerville.
