Timeline

  • 1865 - June 22, John B. Eberly received his A.B. degree and became Professor J. B. Eberly. [1]
  • 1865 - Peter Eberly, John's father secured the old Presbyterian Church, known as "Old Synagogue" [2]
  • 1865 - August, Established; Number of Mt. Union College undergraduates from Wayne County, Ohio transferred. [3]
  • 1866 - April, The Old Synagogue lease expired [4]
  • - Peter Eberly financed building the River Brethren Church located on the South edge of village just back of Paul's Grocery probably at the site of the old Singer Products building. Peter Eberly remolded the building. [5]
  • 1866 - July, Continued school until the facilities at River Brethren Church were not ideal [6]
  • 1866-67 - New building planned with sale of $5,000 sales of stock - temporary arrangements were worked out the village officials to use the Village School at the corner of S. Summit St. and St. Route 585. This space and the old River Brethren Church along with individual homes provided the 'Campus' of Smithville High School. [7]
  • 1867 - July 30, Smithville High School has new building; Costs $8,000 not including ground and equipment, 2 story brick building, 50 x 100 feet, 1st fl 3 rooms; 2nd fl. spacious auditorium with stage curtain - this was the location of the old Smithville Elementary School [8]
  • - Professor John B. Eberly was in charge of the school again [9]
  • - latter years of the Normal School - high school departments were added to the public school system which impacted the attendance for the other educational schools [10]
  • 1885 - Smithville High School support greatly reduced [11]
  • 1885 - Professor Eberly transferred the school to Medina, Ohio [12]
  • 1885 - 1889 - Professor P. C. Palmer, Principal of the high school - Professor Palmer took part in a campaign to banish the saloon in Smithville, Ohio. He stated either the saloon or school must go. Citizens then campaigned against the professor. [13]
  • 1889 - Professor Palmer accepted another teaching job and moved out of the district. [14]
  • 1891 - Reopened under the leadership of Professor C. F. English - enrollment was greatly reduced from Eberlys days of enrollment of 275. [15]
  • 1891-1941 - Grand total enrollment of 45 with several factors affecting interest in the Smithville Academy decline is Wooster University founded in 1866. [16]
  • 1894 - Spring, the School doors were closed [17]
  • 1896 - Professor John B. Eberly returned to reorganize the school he left in 11 years before. Enrollment increased, faculty was excellent, but opposition grew [18]
  • 1903 - Professor John Eberly stopped trying to keep the school going and closed the doors. He then returned to holding the Chautauqua meetings which he started in 1899. [19]
  • 1910 - January 26, Fire, started from a stove on the stage destroying the building. This closed the history of higher education in the Village of Smithville. [20]
  • - In Summary: Over 6,000 students received their education. Occupations: Congressman, lawyers, ministers, doctors and teachers. [21]

1919 - A Reunion of Normal School graduates was held at the destroyed buildings. Plans were made to build a pavilion where future reunions could be held. But, Green Township Board of Education wanted to purchase land to build a new high school building. The graduates were supportive of this move as they could hold their reunions there. [22]
