Biographical Sketch

John Wesley Williams resided in Wayne County but for a short period of time. We first find him residing here when he was drafted for the Civil War, on February 28, 1865 in Wooster, Ohio. He enlisted in Company I of the 27th United States Colored Infantry. His military record indicates he was unassigned. He mustered out on Mary 17, 1865. By the 1870 US Census, he and his family are residing in Salem, Perry Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. His death date is unknown. He did apply for an invalid pension on May 6, 1889 in Ohio. No further information is known. His marriage date to Harriet Jones is unknown. Given the birth date of their first child, John Wesley Williams and Harriet Jones may have been married about 1864. Likewise, the death date of Harriet, the wife of John Wesley Williams, is unknown. There is a listing for a GAR marker for him in the Hope Cemetery located in Salem, Perry Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

There is a story that John Wesley Williams came to Wooster and resided with the Reason Beall Stibbs family for a while. A search for documents to verify this story continues.
