Genealogy and Local History Programs

The Wayne County Public Library strives to offer genealogy and local history programs for our researchers free of charge. Additional programs are offered through the Wayne County Genealogical Society. The library is separate from the local historical societies and genealogical society; however, at times our programs may overlap.

Votes for Women! Celebrating the Centennial of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment

  • Wayne County Historical Society, 546 E. Bowman St., Wooster at 1:00 p.m.
  • Women received the right to vote in national elections on August 26, 1920. The fight for Women Suffrage had its beginning at Seneca Falls, NY in 1848. In 1851, Ohio was one of the 1st states to hold a state convention for Women's Suffrage. This exhibit will take you back in time, starting with the famous words penned by Abigail Adams, "...Remember the ladies..." in a letter written to her husband. Walk through time with Charity Bell, female conductor of the Underground Railroad here in Wayne County, Ohio; through the women's efforts to support the Civil War Soldiers through the Wayne County Soldiers Relief Corps; to gain the privilege to run for and vote in local school board elections in 1894; through many efforts of dedicated ladies in the 1910s to win the support of other local ladies for Women Suffrage; and eventually to hear the words, "Yes" to their fight for equal rights in suffrage.

  • This program is sponsored by the Wayne County Public Library and the Wooster Friends of the Library. Dr. Deleasa Randall-Griffiths from Ashland, Ohio brings Carrie Chapman Catt, suffragist, to life.

  • Scrapbook for Family Historians is a hands on workshop designed to bring together individuals who share an interest in scrapbooking their family photos. Bring your photos and journals to join in the fun. Limited paper and writing utensils will be available. You may bring other scrapbooking tools to share with others if you would like.
