Farmers Hotel, like many businesses in Wooster, Ohio went through a number of changes during its history. It was originally mentioned in the Williams' Akron, Wooster & Cuyahoga Falls Directory of 1859 as being located on the north side of W. Liberty St. between Walnut St. and Grant St.[1] By 1884 it had relocated to 21 N. Buckeye St. and was being run as a boarding house by A. W. Melsheimer. [2] The property went on to be the home and business location of John Markel, a cooper. [3] By 1900 it was again being operated as a boarding house. [4] Markel would continue as the proprietor of the Farmers Hotel through at least 1904. [5] In September of 1907 the bones of a human leg were discovered during the building's demolition. [6]

  • Human Bones Were Found: Underneath an Old Building Formerly Known as Farmer's Hotel on Buckeye Street. [7]

While tearing down the building formerly used as the Farmers Hotel on North Buckeye street, and on which will be erected a livery barn. Mr. Nolan found the bones of the leg of a human skeleton. There was no cellar under this portion of the building. It is the southwest room at the corner of the street and the alley. The bones were found just under a few inches of fine dust and dirt, and also had a shoe laying near the end of the foot bone. They are much crumbled and look as if they had been there for many years. An investigation will be made but it is not likely that the mystery will be unraveled as the bones are so crumbled as to preclude any possibility of finding anything that would identify the body or how it came to be placed under the floor.
