Bever street takes its name from one of the three founders of the City of Wooster: John Bever. He was born in Ireland about 1760 of a German father and an Irish mother. Because of his father's ancestry he spoke fluent German which assisted him in getting acquainted in Pennsylvania when he moved to Georgetown, in Beaver County, Pennsylvania a few years after 1785. One of his first occupations was to furnish supplies to blockhouses built against the Indians south of the Ohio River and also became engaged in milling. John Bever then taught himself drafting and surveying and in 1806 when the surveying of Ohio lands was ordered he went to Marietta to seek employment on the project. Gerneral Rufus Putnam gave him his first surveying jobs and when Putnam was succeeded by General Jared Mansfield, Bever was given three Ohio districts to survey: Columbiana, Stark, and Wayne counties.

John Bever liked Wayne County so well that he along with fellow surveyors, William Henry and Joseph H. Larwill, acquired a quarter-section of land which became the heart of Wooster, Ohio and Larwill honored his good friend, John Bever, by naming a street after him: Bever St.
