Subscription schools, where you had to pay tuition to go to school, was the way education was dispensed in the pioneer days. Many tuition schools in early Ohio were log houses about 18 feet square that were heated by huge fireplaces. They were lighted by one window, which in the earliest days was covered by a sheet of white paper stretched over a wood frame. The paper was oiled to help repel water and permit light to penetrate the dark cabin.

Wayne County was the first of the 88 counties in Ohio to get free public schools through a special act of the Ohio Legislature on April 14, 1853. Free education spread quickly throughout the county after that and a number of public school buildings were built in the county.
