• T. P. Baumgardner Goes to His Eternal Reward.

A telegram received here early Wednesday morning announced the death of T. P. Baumgardner or Peter Baumgardner as je was better known died of paralysis, May 29 at Toledo.

He was long a citizen of Wooster, identified with the business interests during the years when the city grew from a hamlet to city. He was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania., November 13, 1827. His parents came to Wayne County in 1832, settling on a farm near Wooster. The family made the entire trip overland in wagons. The father died one year after coming to the county, leaving the widow to struggle alone. Mrs. Baumgardner took up her new home in Wooster after spending a few years on a farm in Saltcreek township.

Mr. Baumgardner was given but few advantages in the way of education, attending the village schools until old enough tow ork when he served a four years apprenticeship in the furniture factory of Spear & Belstle. He followed this trade for a few years and in company with his brothers erected what was Wooster's first regular place of amusement known as Arcadome Hall engaging in the drug, stationery, grocery and news business. When the building was dedicated a great many people gathered and there was much enthusiasm and speech-making. The business venture was a success and for years the establishment did an enormous trade.

Peter Baumgardner retired from the firm in 1864, and in the following spring purchased the American House block and at once set about remodeling the structure. adding two store rooms, making it the finest business block in the city, and the building as it stands at the present time is a lasting monument to his enterprise and faith in the city of Wooster. Baumgardner embarked in the music business and occupied one of the store rooms and was long the only person engaged in the sale of musical instruments and merchandise. He became interred in music about the _______________________________________ a prominent figure in all musical affairs given in Wooster.

Early in the eighties finding that the music trade did not take up his entire time he embarked in the shoe trade, and was an usual successful, later on a son. _____ L. Baumgardner, succeed to the management of the establishment. He was wedded in 1859 to Miss Elizabeth Smith, the union being blessed with ten children Joseph H., Edson W., Newton L., James F., Harry S., Anna, Lizzie, Thomas, Ella and Carrie. The 1st three being deceased. The others are living and all married, and all make their homes in the Maumee city, but the daughters Lizzie.

The sons and daughters were all of a musical turn and until their departure from Wooster were prominent in the social and musical affairs of the city. The daughters, Anna and Lizzie, were especially talented and became fine performers on the piano and pipe organ. Mr. Baumgardner as a resident of Wooster was known as one of its most public spirited and progressive citizens. He was a staunch Republican, a charter member of the Irene Lodge Knights of Honor and Wayne Council Royal Arcanum. Mr. Baumgardner a few years after the death of Mrs. Baumgardner removed to Toledo where he spent his declining years with his children, who have all achieved business success there and are numbered along the prominent people of Toledo.
