In 1936, Curtis Rittenhouse, owner of the 80-acre family farm on Blachleyville Road, died and designated in his will that the farm be used as "a home for orphaned and crippled children" in memory of his parents, James and Rachel. The will established a trust fund, appraised at $100,000 at his death, to be used for the operation of the home, but the home was delayed for decades due to other stipulations in the will and to several court cases. By 1970, the plans had been altered to propose using the property as a year-round day camp for children with mental disabilities, but the plans stalled yet again.[1]
The Rittenhouse Memorial Home first appears in the local phone directory in 1988.
