Biographical Sketches
Richard L. Morrison was born in around 1900 in Wooster, Ohio. He was the son of Richard Morrison Sr., one of the most prominent black business owners in Wooster. Richard, along with his brother Charles worked at their father Richard Morrison Sr.'s barbershop for quite a few years. Eventually, Richard Morrison opened his own barbershop at the southeast corner of the Square, in the late 20's.[1] His brother also opened a separate shop of his own.
Housing Issue-
When Morrison started looking for his own house in the 1950s, he and his family faced great difficulties as many refused to even show them any housing, let alone sell it. Eventually, they found a house in Keister allotment, which was 5 miles east of Wooster. Even though the owner had hesitation, the Morrisons were able to buy the house at the end. When neighbors were asked, everyone had nice things to say about the Morrisons. Some were also asked if the price of housing decreased since there was a black family in the neighborhood, which was a common assumption at that time. They confirmed that it did not happen at all and they were able to sell their houses with no issues. [2] Housing was a common issue for black families at that time. Wanting to find a house in a white neighborhood was extremely difficult as the neighbors were not very welcoming of them. Even though the Morrison family were well respected in the Wooster community, that still did not help Richard with the housing situation.
