The first bank in Wooster, Ohio was the German Bank of Wooster. It was established in 1815 by Joseph H. Larwill. It failed by 1818. Lawsuits continued to be filed for several years after its failure. In 1838, the German Bank of Wooster was revived. Once again, it failed by 1841. (Wildcat Banks and Broken Banks of the Wayne County Frontier). Other early banks included the The State Bank of Ohio and The Bank of Wooster.

The County Branch of the State Bank of Ohio opened for business in 1845. It received its National charter in 1865. It was the 8th charter granted in the nation. It was at one time the oldest operating bank in Wayne County and remained as a independent financial institution until sold to [National City Bank] in 2004. Four years later, the bank was purchased by [PNC Bank].

The Federal Government took control of all banking operations during the Civil War.
