    E. J. Young, already a successful salt and matches businessman needed a way to package both his salt and matches products. Young formed the Ohio Boxboard Company to manufacture and produce packaging for his salt and matches in 1903. This company became a major employer for Rittman, Ohio, bringing to town many new employees and helping area businesses grow. The Ohio Boxboard Co. was acquired by Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) in 1965, then Rittman Paperboard, boasting of over 1200 employees at it's prime. Sadly, Caraustar - Rittman Paperboard closed it's doors in early 2006.

    RITTMAN COMPANY SEES PROSPERITY COMING

The 20th annual meeting of the directors of hte Ohio Boxboard Co., held at Wadsworth Wednesday, was one which the company looks upon with much pride for reports indicate that in no previous year has this great enterprise closed so successfully says the Rittman Press. At this meeting, it was the concensus of opinion that former plans to double their present output of the factory should be pushing to completion as rapidly as possible, so as to have another paper mill in full operation by next fall. Mr. Gannon, who is always alert to the interests of the company, was re-elected to fill the place of treasurer and manager.

This extensive improvement plan of the company will of necessity add a great many more to the already large payroll; and this is another reminder that homes in Rittman are very scarce. To relieve the housing situation, some concentrated action should be taken.
