Dies Sunday In Hospital

Wooster Brush Co. General Manager Had Been Business Leader Here 35 Years. "Donald J. Foss, 54, vice president, general manager and chairman of the board of directors of The Wooster Brush Company, died at 2:30 p.m., Sunday in the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, where he had undergone a severe operation on Wednesday. Heart weakness, which became acute Saturday, and which several blood transfusions failed to relieve, resulted in his death.

Mr. Foss was born in Wooster April 6, 1884, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Foss, and had lived here all his life. He received his education in Wooster High School and Wooster College, and had been associated with The Wooster Brush Company for more than 35 years. The business, established by his grandfather, is now operated by the third generation of the Foss family. Walter D. Foss, however, continues in office as the company's president.

Observed 30th Anniversary

Donald J. Foss is survived by his wife, Mame Yinkey Foss, last Memorial Day having been their 30th wedding anniversary; by his father, Walter D. Foss, of Cleveland, three brothers, Oscar H. Foss, Clifford P. Foss and Walter R. Foss, all associated in the management of The Wooster Brush Company, and one sister, Mrs. W____ Thompson, of Boston, Mass. Their mother died in 1913. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Foss and family are at present in Europe.

Mr. Foss for many years had been active active member of the Elks Lodge, and the Wooster Country Club.

Served In Army

Only July 5, 1918, he enlisted in the Motor Truck Division of the U.S. Army and went overseas as a corporal on August 21st, serving in France until the close of the war. He was honorably discharged from the service April 25th, 1919.

Mr. Foss, some years ago, very definitely expressed the conviction that money expended for costly funerals could be better devoted to philanthropic and charitable enterprises, and in line with his belief, provided in his will that his own funeral service should be very simple.

Body Is Cremated

The body as he has planned, was cremated today in Detroit, and the ashes will be brought to Wooster. A brief Christian Science service will be held from the Foss home on Forest Drive at 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, and according to his wish, his ashes will be scattered from an airplane over his farm near the city. In deference to his wishes, no monument will be erected for him, and friends are asked to omit flowers at the funeral service.

The passing of Mr. Foss takes from the business life of Wooster a leader of definite sagacity and ability, who has ably carried on the Foss tradition of three generations here. He was a manager of a large enterprise that has meant much to the city of Wooster, and successful not only in expanding its operations, but also in building and retaining the loyalty of its workers, all of whom held him in very high esteem.

In addition to his part in the liberal management of the Wooster Brush Company, Mr. Foss was quietly interest in many little charities in Wooster and elsewhere, which, at various times of the year brought a wealth of happiness to the recipients.
