Joseph Stratton (1788-1836)

Joseph Stratton and his wife Elizabeth Perrigo Stratton (1781-1836) settled in Canaan Township, Wayne County, Ohio in December 1817 with their five children. Joseph was born 16 May 1788 in Sussex County, New Jersey and was the son of Daniel Stratton. Joseph and his wife Elizabeth had eleven children. Joseph Stratton died the 20 December 1836. He was buried at the Canaan Center Cemetery in Canaan Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Joseph Stratton raised his family in Wayne County while taking a very active role in local politics. He was elected Justice / Police order / and Safety of Peace in 1819 serving several terms. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and very active in school affairs. Joseph Stratton purchased 160 acres in the southwest quarter of section 17 of Canaan Township on 21 November 1815. He was recorded in the 1820 US Census of Canaan Township, Wayne County, Ohio and was listed in the 1826 Wayne County Tax List. He owned 1 horse, 4 cows, and his land was valued at $353.
