Joseph A. Caldwell was a well-known publisher of maps during the mid- to late-19th century.
Joseph Andrew Caldwell was born 3 September 1836 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. His father, Alexander Caldwell was native to Ireland and his mother Rachael Sumners was of Scottish birth. He married Clarissa Eliza Hough, daughter of Merrell Hough and Emely (Royce) Hough around 1863, probably in Delaware County, Ohio. This union had three children, but only one survived into adulthood. He died in 1924 in Knox County, Ohio.
