Comprehensive History
In the spring of 1821, brothers David and John Hoisington walked for four and a half months from Vermont to Canaan Township, Ohio, in order to claim their land under a grant from President James Monroe for quarter sections 22 and 23, containing 160 acres each. Upon David's death, his 160 acres went to his son Wirum, who built the existing house in either 1843 or 1846. After Wirum's death, the parcel was divided among his children.[1]
The title for the 40 acres on which the house stands passed from Wirum Hoisington to brother and sister Dr. A. S. Hoisington and Eliza Hoisington Knestrick. Their nephew E. E. and his wife Pearl Hoisington purchased the property in 1936. By the 1970s, six generations of the family had lived on the farm.[2]
