Preparation

Tracing one's family history can be very rewarding. However, it can be very time consuming. Depending on how involved you become, there may be some costs involved.

Before you begin your family history journey, there are some items you should include in your researcher tool kit. The following list was discussed in the brief video.

Basics

  • several sharpened pencils
  • good eraser
  • pencil sharpener
  • highlighter
  • notebook paper
  • sticky notes
  • magnifying class
  • yellow transparency sheet

Storage

  • file folders
  • notebooks
  • file cabinet/file boxes

Electronic Devices

  • USB drive
  • Backup drive/Cloud storage
  • Digital recorder
  • Camera/Smartphone
  • Computer

Tips

  • Many individuals may choose to organize paper copies of the documents found. Others may choose to store items electronically. Some may choose to store items both in hard copy and electronically. Do what is best for you.
  • When storing your items in a box, use plastic rather than cardboard.
  • It is best to keep hard copies of your information in a stable and dry environment. Attics, garages, and sheds are enemies to paper and artifact storage.
  • If storing documents electronically, make sure you backup your data on a regular basis.
  • When depending on digital storage, remember to migrate your data when necessary.
