University of Wooster. Organized Dec. 18, 1866 Dedicated Sept. 7, 1870 They have planted at the city of Wooster one of the finest college buildings in the United States--Harvard and Yale have nothing that can be compared with it. the architectural design, the furniture, and the completeness of all its arrangements, even to the minutest details, excite the admiration of all, and we are also free to say that no other college in this country has such a splendid out-look. It stands in the midst of twenty acres of elevated g[r]ound, and is surrounded, in the distance, by a magnificent panorama of hills. Every thing has been provided to make the student comfortable, and elevate his taste. But commensurate with the needs of its inhabitants, churches and school houses, those lights of life so common throughout the realms of freedom, deck hill, valley, grove, and town. Common schools have not reached that state of perfection which the liberal and beneficent system by which the exist inculcates.

The religious societies most noted in point of number and influence, are the Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Congregational, German Reformed and Christian Disciples. All are lending a power to influence the morals and piety of our community. Caldwell's Atlas 1873, pg 8
