Article title 1-Room Schools Vanishing in Ohio

"COLUMBUS-- The one-room schoolhouse may soon be a thing of the past in Ohio.

Last year, according to the State Department of Education, there were 45 one-room structures in operation. In 1959, there were 264.

The drastic reduction is partly due to the adoption of the Ohio Elementary School Standards in 1959 which required schools to have at least full-time teachers with no more than two grades housed in each classroom. The State Board of Education, when it approved the standards, granted 265 exemptions to districts that could not meet the requirement.

Of the 45 one-room schools in operation, 37 are parochial schools and eight are public schools."
