CARNEGIE INCREASES GIFT TO FIFTENN THOUSAND DOLLARS
Andrew Carnegie has increased his gift for the Wooster public library to 15,000.
On April 17 James Mullins wrote to Mr. Carnegie calling his attention to the law passed last winter by the Ohio legislature giving boards of education the power to levy a tax of one mill annually for the support of libraries, and stating that under this law our board of education could provide $1,500 per annum for the maintenance of a library, and that the board had agreed to do so providing he would kindly increase his donation to $15,000. Mr. Mullins asked this on behalf of the library committee, and in view of the advance in the price of labor and all kinds of building material since Mr. Carnegie had agreed to furnish $12,500.
Prompt and to the point the answer came as follows: “Skibo Castle, Ardgaqy. N. B. May 22, 1903. “James Mullins, Exq. Pres. Library Trustees, Wooster Ohio. “Dear Sir: --Your letter of April 17th received. In response to your request, Mr. Carnegie agrees to increase his library donation [unreadable] to $15,000 in consideration of the town increasing its guarantee to $1,500 per year. “Respectfully yours, “Jas. Bertram, “private Secretary”
The gift will be accepted.
