In an article found in the Wooster Republican on 25 May 1871 on page 3 titled, "B. Barrett & Co.'s Machine Works", it states that B. Barrett Co. is the manufacturers of Steam Engines, Boilers, all kinds of Mill Work, &c. The company's extensive shops are located on E. Liberty St. located near the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne and Columbus Railway depot.

The shops were built in 1858 and prospered from the beginning. "Their steam engines and boilers are in use all over the country. At home, in Wayne county, they are in general use. The immense McDonald & Company Agricultural Works, Wooster, are run by an eighty-five horse power engine of B. Barrett & Co.'s build; the paper mill engine of the same power, besides many others, were also made at Barrett's shop. Their engines are in use in States and Territories as far west as Colorado. Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, & c., are full of them everywhere giving full satisfaction...They manufacture engines from two horse to two hundred horse power."

The Works are divided into four departments:

1. Machine Shop - Foreman, Robert Barrett
2. Moulding Room - Foreman, Robert Nixon
3. Pattern Room - Foreman, Daniel Hiser
4. Boiler Yard - Foreman, W. Rogers

"There are no steam engine works in any of the surrounding counties, and having such an excellent and successful one in Wooster our citizens are justly pourd of the fact."
