William Armstrong was the son of William Armstrong and his second wife, Catherine McPherson. A grandson of Thomas Armstrong one of the earliest pioneers of Wayne County, Ohio.

- William Armstrong bought and stood the chestnut racehorse trotting stallion, Robert McGregor Jr., 2:29 1/4, at his farm in Golden Corners until he sold the horse to Henry A. Haller in 1896.
