Comprehensive History
William Wehe started to build carriages along with John Weimer in Marshallville, Ohio in 1860 and the business was known as the Wehe Company. In 1882, Mr. George Gerstenslager, a young blacksmith, went to work for the company. In the early 1890s, George Gerstenslager became the owner along with John Weimer. At that time the company was known as The Weimer and Gerstenslager Company. In 1904, George Gerstenslager assumed majority ownership and management of the company and it became known as The Gerstenslager Company and the business was moved to Wooster, Ohio in 1907.
The Marshallville brick building that housed the Weimer and Gerstenslager company was built in 1877 to accommodate the growing business. After Gerstenslager moved his business to Wooster the old Marshallville building became the first home of the Bauer Ladder Company. After Bauer Ladder Company moved to Wooster, Ohio the old brick building in Marshallville from used as residence for a time, and later became a tavern called the Melody Ranch. When Marshallville residents voted to ban liquor sales the tavern in the building was closed and it sat vacant.[1]
