Biographical Sketches

John Rice came with his parents, Barnhart and Susan Rice, from Pennsylvania when quite young. His father purchased a farm when the country was relatively new, one mile south of Wooster, which is now known to be a part of the lands owned by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, where John was reared to manhood and helped to clear the land and improve the farm. He used to be a teamster with oxen that were his great delight when he was young and the country new. He was one of the Wayne County Commissioners at the time the Wayne County Infirmary was built along with Henry Kramer and Clinton Wilson. Politically, he was always associated with the Democrat party.

John Rice and two of his sisters: the older Lizzie Rice, and younger Sarah Rice, never married. All three lived with their parents in the old stone house on the Wooster homestead and cared for them until their parents died, after which the old Wooster homestead was sold. Being very attached to each other the three siblings put their money together and purchased the farm in Medina County 3-miles east of Lodi on which they had lived at the time of John Rice's death, at the age of 78, on May 31, 1892. John's older sister, Lizzie Rice, passed away unexpectedly in March of 1892 from complications of pneumonia. It was said that John being feeble at the time was wrought with grief over his sister's death which brought about his own death two months later.
