This house was originally started in 1847, by Ephram Quimby and R. B. Stibbs, who erected the building, and a general dry goods house was opened by Mr. Edwin French, who was succeeded by D. H. King & Company, who was followed by George Plumber & Company, in 1859. In 1864 Mr. Plumber retired and the name of the firm became R. R. Donnelly & Company, and at the death of the senior member of this firm in 1874, when after one year in the hands of the administrator the present firm assumed the control. This house occupies one of the most prominent locations in this city, where they enjoy ample space for the storage and display of a large stock of foreign and American dry goods, comprising besides staple fabrics, in the silk and felt department, plan black silks in all grades, fancy silks, brocades, velvets an plush goods, while the general ladies' dress goods department exhibits a complete line of staple and fancy cotton and mixed fabrics and suitings, the choicest selections from both American and foreign looms and latest seasonable novelties. The flannel and woolen goods department comprises complete lines, linens, and housekeepers' department, domestic and cotton goods, etc. Ladies' and gentlemen's furnishings goods department embraces latest novelties in ties and hosiery, gloves, silk and gauze underwear, ladies' corsets, notions, etc. This house also exhibits a fine line of ingrain, tapestry and brussels carpets, plush, velvets, etc., rugs, mattings, pol cloths, lace damask and porterre curtains, poles and fixtures. Buying from direct importations and the leading manufacturing houses or the country. this house enjoys equal facilities in securing supplies with the leading houses of our metropolitan cities. The members of this firm, J. S. Bissell & Bro., have shown in their mercantile career that executive ability and enterprise which comprehends and meets the requirements of this department of commercial operations in this growing municipality.
