John Washington Newkirk was born 4 July 1826 in Ohio to Reuben and Margaret (Leyda) Newkirk. He married Rebecca Wells on 1 March 1849 in Holmes Co, OH. To this union 10 children were born. Four died in infancy, including 3 unnamed infants and Elsa Ora. Other children included Mary Ann, Zeriah, Reuben F. , John Simon, Minnie, and Esta. In the 1870 US Census for Clinton Twp, Wayne Co, OH John W. Newkirk's real estate was valued at $14,000 and his personal estate valued at $1,400. John W. Newkirk died 25 June 1907. He, his wife, and several of his children are buried in the Newkirk Cemetery near Shreve, Clinton Twp, Wayne Co, OH.
Rebecca (Wells) Newkirk was born in 1830 and died in 1902.
