Comprehensive History

Located on the south side of E. Sunset Dr. at the top of Shinersburg Hill in Rittman, this brick home was built by Abraham Gish, a master builder, cabinet maker, and contractor around 1875 and was an example of the craftsmanship of local 19th century builders. Gish, a descendant of Jacob Gish, planned the structure to be part of an estate, which included the land where Rittman's American Legion Hall now stands. The house and grounds were considered a showplace during the Gish occupancy. Byron Gish was the last of the family to live in the home, which passed out of the family's hands in the 1920s.[1]
